Does Forex Disturb Your Sleep?

When we are still waiting for the state of trade in order to improve, apparently after a few hours, the situation has not improved and increasingly negative pips movement. We're tired of waiting, and then sleep. Are you able to sleep with this state?

ALL my trading disturbs my sleep. I have lost many hours a night re-playing the day's game, thinking about my mistakes, wondering about my profits and if I did something right or if I just got lucky, but I know what you are talking about. I've been doing this for years and I found the only solution for me is to trade small enough where I can sleep. I know it's a cliche---and most trading cliches are bunk---but it really will help your game if you CAN sleep even though you have a trade going.

But I definitely know where you are coming from. I'm currently in oil in a big way (for my portfolio) and I wonder about what is going to happen after the computer is off and the clock says bed time. I'm sure someone will get on here and say something about setting your stops and setting your price target and just let it go, but it's still stressful.

forex historically trends more than many other instrument classes. If you are taking losers home, most likely you are fighting trend more often than you would if you were taking losing positions in other instrument classes home … Generally speaking...

Have you considered not taking losing positions ‘home’? …unless you also have limit orders resting at levels of even more adversity and your probs are tail high for a reversal. ??? For many if not most systems and with the ‘staying power’ / capitalization of most leveraged traders, across time, getting out of fx losers at your close is better for your bottom line than sticking in… Generally speaking...

Sleep is an integral part of recovery from ‘stress’. Without adequate recovery your performance, when seen from a longer span like ‘monthly’, will go down… and down… and down… Generally speaking...

I love sleeping. If you can't sleep because you're worried, you should do something to sort out the problem that you are worried about (whatever it may be, trading or life in general). Perhaps close your positions and take a break, or trade a smaller position size. If you can't think clearly about when to buy or sell, then you will make more mistakes and lose more.

For me, it helps to be able to say, "Oh, price did that? That's interesting." - to be detached from the winning and losing (it's hard to be like that and I often get worked up or emotional when I'm in a trade, but I think that being 'detached' is the way that I want to trade).

Forex doesn't have to disturb your sleep, but you must rearrange your schedule to catch the moves. For example, I live in the Pacific time zone of the US, so I go to bed at 5pm. Awake at midnight, have my coffee, go to the gym and am sitting at my computer by 2am. I trade the German DAX, London Forex session, catch the early Crude Oil and Index futures moves at 5am and usually done with my trading day by 10am. I then spend the rest of the day spending quality time with my wife and children

I keep the same schedule on weekends so not to disturb the sleep pattern. I also sleep in an inside bedroom without windows with ear plugs so the kids playing doesn't awake me.

Note: the above schedule/routine would be near impossible for those that love to watch evening television. Simple... get rid of the boob tube, and your income possibilities accelerate.

I agree with Dith, here. If my normal bedtime when I was trading stocks or had a different type job was lets say midnight, how am I supposed to go to sleep at midnight knowing that in just 2 hrs, all hell could bust loose. Usually 3am but they make many a sleep deprived trader miss out by moving the mkts at 1 or 1:30am these past few weeks and its all over till NY buy 3am!!! So yeah, we have that now to contend with as well. The "high volume" times are not as clearly in boxes as they used to be.

Plus, its not just missing the trade that keesp us awake. Here is what we dont talk about boys. Drum roll, please...................................... Ok, some of us have trained ourselves to go into almost a meditative state when the mkt isnt moving,so we get to constantly reflect on our trading plan or someone elses you just saw on this form, or even getting out of this crazy business altogether. We may not always have something to trade, but we always have something to be thinking about, or in OUR case ,something to analyze.

And so now if you get thru the London session, its now 7am or so and its totally dead. But whats this!!!!!? The sun is coming up, birds are chirping, the news from all over the world is streaming. Plus the action for NY starts at 8 or 8:30am. Do we really want to miss that?

I personally have no idea how anyone could hold down a full time job and also trade forex. I couldn't do it and would have a heart attack from the stress and sleep deprivation. All of thos sweet, polite, charming men who were interviewed by Jack Schwager in Market Wizards. So composed, so in control. Yeah...right! Catch them on friday morning at 10:30am when they now have almost zero chance if im forex to get even for the week, and they have been living on coffee and determination. Oh yeah, thats another thing. Would anyone here agree with me and say that the average trader probably drinks a lot more coffee than the regular working person out there? Heck, you can develop permanant sleep disorders just from caffeine manipulating your circadian sleep cycles long enough!!!!

But cant you just set it and forget it as the swing traders do, we keep hearing? Sure.....try it for a few days. Let me know how much Valium you needed. LOL

Im seeing a pattern already from this thread. The ones whose sleep is not disturbed are those who trade just one session, once per day. I think in Futures and Stocks it is much easier but in Forex, who doesnt want to know what is happening at 3:30am when they are "supposed to be trading 8am-1pm daily as the other trader on the pacific coast does. Paul Tudor Jones(all of you should see the video on him) is up at 4am, no shower, breakfast, just coffee...and hes right at his desk trading gold or forex at 4:05am And thats with 29 other emplyees! I always feel I am missing something if I trade only one session. I wish they just traded everything from stocks to forex at the same time every day, the same 8 hrs. Pick any time and I will go along with it. Woullnt all the traders in the world be soooo much more relaxed? The brokerages too!

for me it does not matter, because we are sure there are funds still hold floating forex, and tomorrow when we wake up the price was better, and I believe it can be achieved, because we also do pre-op analysis on forex trading, and we also have sure, then we do not feel disturbed sleep and a comfortable, healthy and tomorrow is bright, easy to think well.

It actually does. Sometimes it doesn't let me to fall asleep at all since I'm thinking of how I could avoid that losses or it might be the very time to switch the strategy etc.

Really want to get rid of that bad habit - it bothers me more than smoking! :crap:

Thanks for your advice and experience! I've come up with the similar decision - the break is surely needed. Really hope that my idea of giving my dimes to a money manager can help me to earn some spare time (hopefully, profits too :roll eyes:).

As I think about it, my dilemma is that Im not a day trader. The lowest time frame I will play is the 60m and thats usually a 2 day trade on avg. So I usually get in at the start of a new day/night which on NY time is 6pm. I watch it until the spreads close up and get some kind of feel for what the mky wants to do***

and I put my trades on, and truthfully i dont HAVE to be watching the london session, i could wait for the ny, but i often sleep right thru NY till 11am. so I never trust my sleep habits so i get up at 2am to "take a peak" and suddenly im trading till 5:30am.

I really must try to put my trades on at 7pm and shut down till morning. Or.....retest both of my systems and see how they would work if i dont even look at the charts till 7:45am or so when NY gets rolling. That is my goal. Or...I can kiss getting back into great shape in the gym again good bye. At 54 its hard enough.

    • Date: 1st April 2025.   Will Gold’s Rally Hold Strong as New Trade Tariffs Take Effect Tomorrow?   Gold continues to increase in value for a sixth consecutive day and is trading more than 17% higher in 2025. Amid fear of higher inflation, a recession and the tariffs war escalating investors continue to invest into Gold pushing demand higher. The trade policy from April 2nd onwards continues to be a key factor for the whole market. Can Gold maintain its upward trend? Trade Policy From Tomorrow Onwards Starting as soon as tomorrow, a 25% tariff will be imposed on all passenger cars imported into the United States. While this White House policy is anticipated to negatively affect European industrial performance, it will also lead to higher transportation and maintenance costs for everyday American taxpayers. The negative impact expected on both the EU and US is one of the reasons investors continue to buy Gold. Additionally, last month, President Donald Trump announced reciprocal sanctions against any trade partners that impose import restrictions on US goods. Furthermore, tariffs on products from Canada and the EU could increase even more if they attempt to coordinate a response. Overall, investors continue to worry that new trade barriers will prompt retaliatory measures, particularly from China, the Eurozone, and Japan. Any retaliation is likely to escalate the trade conflict and prompt another reaction from the US. Experts at Goldman Sachs and other investment banks warn that this will lead to rising inflation and unemployment. They also caution that it could effectively halt economic growth in the US.   XAUUSD 1-Hour Chart   The Weakness In The US Dollar Another factor which is allowing the price of XAUUSD to increase in value is the US Dollar which has been unable to maintain any bullish momentum. Despite last week’s Core PCE Price Index rising to its highest level since February 2024, the US Dollar has been unable to see any significant rise in value. Due to the US Dollar and Gold's inverse correlation, the price of Gold is benefiting from the Dollar weakness. Investors worry that new trade barriers will prompt retaliatory measures from China, the Eurozone, and Japan, potentially escalating the conflict. Experts at The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. believe that such actions by the US administration will drive rising inflation and unemployment while effectively halting economic growth in the country. Can Gold Maintain Momentum? When it comes to technical analysis, the price of Gold is not trading at a price where oscillators are indicating the instrument is overbought. The Relative Strength Index currently trades at 68.88, outside of the overbought area, since Gold’s price fell 0.65% during this morning’s session. However, even with this decline, the price still remains 0.40% higher than the day’s open price. In terms of fundamental analysis, there continues to be plenty of factors indicating the price could continue to rise. However, the price movement of the week will also partially depend on the employment data from the US. The US is due to release the JOLTS Job Vacancies for February this afternoon, the ADP Non-Farm Employment Change tomorrow, and the NFP Change and Unemployment Rate on Friday. If all data reads higher than expectations, investors may look to sell to lock in profits at the high price. Key Takeaway Points: Gold’s Rally Continues – Up 17% in 2025 as investors seek safety from inflation, recession fears, and trade tensions. Trade War Impact – New US tariffs and potential retaliation from China, the EU, and Japan drive uncertainty, boosting Gold demand. Weak US Dollar – The Dollar’s struggle supports Gold’s rise due to their inverse correlation. Gold’s Outlook – Uptrend may continue, but US jobs data could trigger profit-taking. • Date: 31st March 2025.   Trump Confirms Tariffs on All Countries, Sending Stocks Lower.   The NASDAQ continues to trade lower due to the US confirming the latest tariffs will be on all countries. In addition to this, bearish volatility also is largely due to the higher inflation data from Friday. The NASDAQ declines to its lowest price since September 11th 2024. Core PCE Price Index - Inflation Increases Again! The PCE Price Index read 2.5% aligning with expert forecasts not triggering any alarm bells. However, the Core PCE Price Index rose from 0.3% to 0.4% MoM and from 2.7% to 2.8% YoY, signalling growing inflationary pressure. This increases the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will maintain elevated interest rates for an extended period. The NASDAQ fell 2.60% due to the higher inflation reading which is known to pressure the stock market due to pressure on consumer demand and a more hawkish Federal Reserve. Boston Fed President Susan Collins recently commented that tariffs could drive up inflation, though the long-term impact remains uncertain. She told journalists that a short-term spike is the most probable outcome but believes the current pause in monetary policy adjustments is appropriate given the prevailing uncertainties. Although, certain investment banks such as JP Morgan actually believe the Federal Reserve will be forced into cutting rates. This is due to expectations that the economy will struggle under the new trade policy. For example, JP Morgan expects the Federal Reserve to delay rate cuts but will quickly cut towards the end of 2025. Market Risk Appetite Takes a Hit! A big factor for the day is the drop in the risk appetite of investors. This can be seen from the VIX which is up almost 6%, Gold which is trading 1.30% higher and the Japanese Yen which is the day’s best performing currency. Most safe haven assets, bar the US Dollar, increase in value. It is also worth noting that all indices are decreasing in value during this morning's Asian session with the Nikkei225 and NASDAQ witnessing the strongest decline. Previously the stock market rose in value as investors heard rumours that tariffs would only be on certain countries. This bullish swing occurred between March 14th and 25th. Over the weekend, President Donald Trump indicated that the upcoming tariffs would apply to all countries, not just those with the largest trade imbalances with the US. NASDAQ - Technical Analysis In terms of technical analysis, the NASDAQ continues to obtain indications that sellers control the price action. The price opens on a bearish price gap measuring 0.30% and trades below all Moving Averages on all timeframes. The NASDAQ also trades below the VWAP and almost 100% of the most influential components (stocks) are declining in value.     The next significant support level is at $18,313, and the resistance level stands at $20,367.95. Key Takeaway Points: NASDAQ falls to its lowest since September 2024 as the US confirms tariffs on all countries, adding to inflation concerns. Core PCE inflation rises to 0.4% MoM and 2.8% YoY, increasing the likelihood of prolonged high interest rates. Investor risk appetite drops as VIX jumps 6%, gold gains 1.3%, and safe-haven assets outperform. NASDAQ shows strong bearish momentum, trading below key technical levels with support at $18,313 and resistance at $20,367.95. Always trade with strict risk management.
