Are You a Solitary Trader ?

Recommended Posts

They say "No man is an island".

I imagine most of us retail traders work form a small home office. Sometimes I feel the need for some human (trader) contact, even if it's just a reality check.

Over the years I have met many traders at trade shows, seminars etc. I have a handful that I keep in touch with, either live, or via email.

How many of you do the same ?

One of the adjustments I had to make when trading full time was not having anyone to talk to all day. I usually go to the grocer everyday… and I would catch myself striking up conversations with total strangers, chatting up the cashier, in a general sense… being affable. I'm a low key sort of person, and not someone who needs a lot of interaction to be happy, but when you go all day without speaking to someone… well, I then have something to say. It doesn't take me long to get it out of my system, and it's always been well received… so I guess it's not a problem… everyone just thinks I'm outgoing.

There are friends and/or family that I see most every evening, but it's that initial release of getting out of the house and looking for some contact that I find most amusing.

I hadn't thought about it for awhile, so possibly I've just become accustomed to it… yes, it was a major adjustment.

Wow, so true, hadn't thought of that. I do the same thing, constantly chatting up total strangers. Lol.

Too funny: "I'm not going to rob ya, and I don't want anything... I just haven't spoken to anyone all day".

Thank God for Facebook.

;-)

but I still feel detached, isolated, and removed.

I chat on FB with friends,

but I do not talk to other traders.

I have tried skype or paltalk or similar programs,

but inevitably they became distractions, because they do not trade the same way I do.

or they chat too much, (about their weekend, their children, their mother-in-law)

or they are too nosy, (not that I don't share, but how much I made today is not something I want to discuss)

or too much opinion on the market direction...

so, trading is still a lonely existence.

I have been through many variations.....and this is my personal experience.....

Traded on a floor - Always someone to talk to - 80% had nothing to say and talked crap about sport most of the time, or their egos talked.

Moved to an office and screens (12 of us together) - much the same, the good social atmosphere made the good times great, the bad times always sucked regardless.

Moved to an office with two of us, then three of us - we would either banter about nothing or the markets most of the time, or might sit for 4 hours saying very little......(this was my personal preference)

Traded in Oz by myself, at one stage I worked out I was probably going out 5-6 nights a week, with different friends or family - this was my social interaction to make up for the fact i had little contact during the day.On the really quiet days (or often those whereby the profits were being run i made friends with the local shop owners and cafe owners) It worked for me.

Also sat in an office for a time with about 12 others, mainly market types doing different things.....great socially, but not so good for work as too many distractions. Sitting in an office with strangers can be more lonely and frustrating.....

Moved to the UK - sitting by myself in "friendly" London where even the shop owners who you see every day wonder who you are each time, and are rarely talkative :crap:. This really sucks especially in the dark winters. Now have a good bunch of friends, but the social, impromptu aspect of Oz is not here in the UK.

After seeing many versions and sorry for the long history

:2c:....for me I need the real (not skype etc) social contact of even just one or two people who are of similar mind and trading ideas - we dont need to trade the same, but we need to understand the traders mind so to speak. This usually means you know when to shut up, what questions to ask, and can also provide level thoughts when needed.......IMHO - hard to find, and only comes over time

sorry Tams ;) - I hate FB, prefer TL as I like the topics here more than which friends dog ate a pizza then puked on the carpet.

but agree trading is a lonely existence, and one of the aspects I really hate about it when you dont have the substitute for an established network of friends or trading buddies, or your partner (even though she also is in finance and very smart and talented) just does not get what you do - from a trading perspective.

(working on solutions, but it all takes time)

Very Good Question !!!

I begin to trade full time on last autumn... Before beginning to trade full time for most of my life I worked for myself ( I had owned mainly a computers company). So even at this time I was working with no coworkers. But at least at this time I see customers, Sales rep, phone calls to order parts, going on site sometime to repair, etc... But overall was alone ;-)

Now trading full time it is REALLY BEING Alone No-Coworkwers, customers etc...

So me too Use FB (not for chat, I don't like chat on computers) & StockTwits as substitute.

When my day is done, 3-5 times a week I go to supper in restaurant to BE with real peoples, even if I don't talk to anybody I feel "being part of"(World) :P

Over the top I'm single and have no family except my daughter that have is own life...

I'm not saying I'm unhappy, I'M HAPPY :-) with my life ! I choose it, nothing is perfect.

To overcome this loneliness (I'm in mid 40), I look for a girlfriend to SHARE with her.. but seeing peoples with day trading, being in mid-40, no family ask imagination and audacity.

So I begin to look on "single networking sites" ... cause i.m pretty sure there is a lot of peoples that work for themselves in the same situation. And also on week-end where there is a festival, music show I go to interact with peoples and try to make connections with others, but it's not easy... to make real connections.

I don't complaint to much, cause I'm optimistic and I do something that I like and choose.

Also I plan a 1-6 months vacation in Asia (No time limit, OPEN ticket) not in a resort but to see "real peoples" and live with them.

I like Buddhist philosophy (it's one thing that help me to manage my emotions in trading and life) .

Overall I'm ab happy guy with a beautiful Life and I work on my life to make it better on many aspect like having more REAL interaction with Human Being 8-)

Regards

no offense,

I would give up everything to move out of London to live in Oz

None taken and I would agree with you. The original reason i moved here was at 36 years old i had one of those, "maybe i might do something different moments".....a few years later we have female issues - presently I am here for her and her career....I am a modern man.

Reality at present is - London is cheap compared to Oz for many things, its a great time zone, I travel a fair bit, and it has certain tax advantages as a non dom.....may as well make the most of the advantages, but Oz is the place i intend to get back to to live.

Mystic yes apart from family, it mostly is a Solitary Traders life

Though this could be somewhat misleading to the newbies or struggling traders

Instead what I learnt from my solitude days when learning to trade is

You cant just work hard & close Yourself in to be successful at trading

(I didnot plan it this way but it just happened that way; Maybe we human beings prefer to loose in silence and solitude rather than others finding out)

By the time I realise it was more about Self than System

Took some steps to Balance my working & family life

But by than had lost most of me social life or desire to go out much

Though as family we usually take four / five weeks of Dec/Jan off abroad on holidays

Now I just trade from my dedicated home/office

Once or twice a year I temporarily try some interesting trading rooms out

(have recently heard that Tim of eminimind has just started a new room so may check it out)

But comparatively still prefer much a quiter life now

Siuya agreed weather wise UK is much challenging to live and such occupation does not help!

Has anyone thought about opening an online room where Traders can trade their own system and if they wish share their trades, methods & help if asked, etc

Regards Minoo

like the first point....plus a lot does depend on where you are in life. A 25 year old might view things differently to a 45 year old.

Re the 2nd point, isnt that what TL is :). I am sure variations exist

...personally I have little interest in constant chatter, and find it a bit like trying to have a phone call while driving. (hands free of course)

They cant see what you are seeing and loose all context so while you are swerving trying to miss the truck they are talking about last weeks episode on TV, and then saying "can you hear me?"

It is the real life social interaction (must be too old school)- and not with strangers locked into a soulless room that the only things you have in common is the same stock code....that i miss

....sitting here naked, coffee and deciding the trades for the day while scratching myself is one upside to the solitary life ;) (today I think i might look for longs in the EURUSD)

    • Date: 21st January 2025.   Gold Surges Past Key Resistance Level, Undeterred by Looming Tariffs.   Gold prices have risen to their highest level since November 6th, nearing a full correction from the post-election decline. In recent months, analysts have made clear predictions regarding the price of Gold rising to $3,000 in the first half of 2025. This prediction took a hit after the US elections triggered a 6.50% rise in the US Dollar. Is a $3,000 target possible? How Does Trump Influence Gold? The focus of the market over the past week has been the influence of a Trump Presidency on tradable assets. So far in January 2025, the price of gold has risen by more than 4.00%. This suggests that investors are confident Trump will not negatively impact gold in the medium to long term. However, investors are also considering the possibility of higher import duties on nearly all goods entering the United States, particularly from Canada, Mexico, and China.     These measures could disrupt global supply chains if these countries choose to retaliate. As a result, the Federal Reserve may cut less in 2025 and the US Dollar may increase further. This is the market’s main concern and could potentially pressure Gold prices lower. In 2018, during the previous “trade wars”, Gold prices fell for 6-consecutive months. However, many economists believe the Federal Reserve will be forced into cutting on 3 occasions. If this does transpire, the price of Gold will be supported further. Trump did not give any concrete signals on tariffs during his speech. The Republican administration seems likely to focus on targeted tariff increases, particularly on critical imports such as electric vehicles. Tesla Stocks are already trading 0.50% higher before the market opens. UCFTC Gold Report And Influential Factors The US Commodities Future Trading Commission also confirms the increase in demand via order flow analysis. The Commission’s data shows net speculative positions rose to 279.4K from 254.9K last week. Buyers have been actively forming positions, with their balance reaching 221.6K compared to 9.1K for sellers. Last week, buyers added 14.9K contracts, while sellers reduced theirs by 3.1K, reflecting strong confidence in the continued upward trend of XAU/USD. When monitoring external factors and its influence on the price of Gold, traders will most likely continue to monitor Bond Yields, Earnings Reports and the US Dollar. Currently, lower bond yields are supporting Gold prices but this is something investors will need to continue monitoring. Gold prices may also potentially benefit from weaker earnings data to a certain extent. The most volatile day this week will most likely be on Friday as the Bank of Japan confirms its Interest rate decision and global economies release their PMI reports. Gold’s Performance - Technical Analysis. The price of Gold this morning is trading 0.75% higher than its open price. The retracement seen during the previous week was weaker than the average retracement size seen over the past 30-days indicating the momentum of the bullish price movement. The average bullish impulse wave measures 2.75% and the current impulse wave reads 1.49%. Therefore, if the asset was to continue similar price movements, the price potentially could rise to $2,763. However, this would depend on how upcoming events influence the price.     Currently, technical analysis is providing a bullish bias as the asset breaks through the resistance level seen on a daily timeframe. In addition to this, the price trades above all Moving Averages and Cumulative Delta Statistics show higher volume in favour of buy orders. For this reason, the asset is witnessing bullish signals. However, if the price declines or retraces, traders should be cautious, as the bullish trend may regain momentum when the price approaches the 200-Period Moving Average on the 5-minute timeframe.   Key Takeaways: Gold prices have risen to their highest level since November 6th. Last week, buyers added 14.9K contracts, while sellers reduced theirs by 3.1K, reflecting strong confidence in the continued upward trend of XAU/USD. Currently, technical analysis is providing a bullish bias as the asset breaks through the resistance level seen on Gold’s daily timeframe Economists believe the Federal Reserve will be forced into cutting on 3 occasions.   Always trade with strict risk management. • re TikTok Recently metafakebook made what was apparently a move to stay aligned with ‘culture’ - no more fact ‘checking’, no more censorhip... basically ‘Zucker’ was shown that his mission was failing because they were only building profiles on ‘useful idiots’ instead of those who oppose the great centralization  (... just like long ago he only saw campus potential and had to be shown the promise and rewarded for fronting the great spyware and social engineering project called Fakebook)... ie they could have replaced him long ago In the same vein, who holds ‘title’ to tiktok doesn’t matter either... it will remain a spyware project regardless of who ‘buys’ it... and the data will forever be available to the CCP Just sayin’

    • Date: 20th January 2025.   The NASDAQ Rises As Trump Inauguration Edges Closer!   US indices increased in value for the first time after struggling for 5 consecutive weeks. Of the main US indices the NASDAQ witnessed the strongest gains (4.12%). Risk indicators point to a higher risk appetite under the new US President, Donald Trump. President Trump's inauguration will take place this afternoon and has promised to sign over 100 consecutive orders within his first week. NASDAQ - Higher Investor Confidence! NASDAQ traders begin to stomach less frequent interest rate adjustments, the market turns its attention to earnings and Trump’s presidency. Investors are becoming more bullish under expectations that Trump will apply policies to support the US economy and entice further investment into the US stock market. A "risk-on" sentiment is evident in today's sessions, reflected in risk indicators like the VIX, High-Low Index, and Bond yields.     Investors this week will concentrate on two factors. The first factor is Trump’s consecutive orders which he has advised will be signed within his first week. Investors will closely monitor how and if these policies influence the US economy and stocks. The second factor is earnings season, which will start to gain momentum this week. Tomorrow, Netflix will release its quarterly earnings report after the market closes. Netflix is the NASDAQ’s 10th most influential company and 11th most impactful stock. Analysts expect the company’s earnings per share to drop from $5.40 to $4.21, but for Revenue to rise to $10.11 Billion. If Netflix is able to beat the earnings per share and revenue expectations, fundamental elections would indicate a rise in the price. Over the past 12 months the price has risen 76%. A further increase would further support the NASDAQ. Thereafter, investors will turn their attention to Intuitive Surgical’s earnings report. Currently, investors believe the company’s earnings per share and revenue will rise compared to the previous quarter. Intuitive’s stock has risen by more than 9% in the past week alone indicating that investors believe the company will continue to beat earnings expectations. The company has beat expectations over the past 12-months. How are Markets Reacting to Trump's inauguration? Trump pledged to issue executive orders aimed at advancing artificial intelligence programs and establishing the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). Analysts expect these two alone to support US stocks. However, investors are not yet certain to what extent upcoming tariffs will pressure the NASDAQ and stocks. During the previous trade wars, the NASDAQ fell by 25% over a period of 4-months. Traders also should note that the NASDAQ rose in the 6-weeks after Trump won the elections. Over the past week, the VIX index fell by more than 12% indicating that the market believes US stocks will perform well under a Trump presidency. Simultaneously, US Bond yields have fallen from 4.80% to 4.58% which is known to positively influence the US stock market. Both the VIX and lower bond yields indicate higher investor confidence as Trump advises that policies will prompt more employment, US made products and more pro-US policies. NASDAQ - Technical Analysis The price of the NASDAQ trades above the 200-bar Moving Average on a 5-minute Chart indicating bullish price movement. Moving Averages have also crossed over upwards and the price trades above the VWAP indicating that the asset is maintaining its bullish momentum. Price action is also forming clear higher highs and higher lows, but investors will be cautious if the price does not find resistance at the $21,637 resistance level. In order to break above this level, investors will be hoping for positive earnings data from Netflix and Intuitive.     Key Takeaways: President Trump's inauguration will take place this afternoon with promise to sign over 100 consecutive orders within his first week. US indices rise after 5 weeks of declines, with the NASDAQ leading at 4.12%. Trump pledged to issue executive orders aimed at advancing artificial intelligence programs and establishing the Department of Government Efficiency. Analysts expect Netflix earnings per share to drop from $5.40 to $4.21, but for Revenue to rise to $10.11 Billion. • Consider: some 80% of small to medium-sized businesses around the world don’t have a website.   Many businesses in emerging economies rely on social media platforms (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook) as their primary digital presence instead of formal websites.   But even in more digitally advanced economies, the number can hover around half.   Why? Simple answer: although we’ve made it easier to make a website, it’s still not easy enough.   Let’s say a yoga instructor wants to offer online classes but lacks tech skills or a budget.   Instead of struggling with confusing platforms, she tells her AI agent, “Set up a website for me to host yoga classes.”   The AI handles everything.   It integrates Stripe for payments, Zoom for live classes, scheduling services for in-person classes, and a chat module for inquiries.   It even suggests templates.   When the instructor picks one and asks for a purple and white color scheme, the AI updates it instantly.   No coding. No frustration. Just results.   And the best part? She didn’t have to touch a single screen or key.   This is the future Wilson describes in Age of Invisible Machines.   And, as mentioned, it’s powered by three core technologies:   Conversational User Interfaces (CUIs): Say what you need; the system handles it. From building websites to booking flights, it’s fast and human-like.   Composable Architecture: Traditional business solutions become “modules”. Like LEGO bricks, modular tools—payments, chats, scheduling—snap together to create custom solutions without starting from scratch.   No-Code Programming: AI agents code for you, empowering anyone to create without needing a developer. It’s not just a better way to interact with technology…   It’s a complete reimagining of how industries operate.   As Harvard Business School’s Marco Iansiti says, “This isn’t disruption—it’s a fundamental shift in production and interaction.”   And, the thing is…   It’s not just possible. It’s already happening.   Early examples are already here. – Chris Campbell, AltucherConfidential Profits from free accurate cryptos signals: https://www.predictmag.com/
