Steidlmayer on Markets: Trading with Market Profile

Recommended Posts

From the Inside Flap

Market Profile™ is a form of technical analysis that was jointly developed by renowned trader and author J. Peter Steidlmayer and the Chicago Board of Trade. Over the years, this unique tool has helped traders gain an unparalleled understanding of the markets, as well as find profitable trading opportunities within them. Simple in concept, yet complex in detail, Market Profile™ organizes a number of market elements into a rapidly understood graphic form–revealing trading opportunities other methodologies miss.

In the first edition of this classic guide to Market Profile™, Steidlmayer introduced traders to this revolutionary new way of reading and trading the markets. Now Steven Hawkins returns to update and revise Steidlmayer’s concept of Market Profile™ within the context of today’s fast-paced markets.

Steidlmayer on Markets: Trading with Market Profile™, Second Edition lays the foundation for understanding and implementing the Market Profile™ methodology by providing background information based on Steidlmayer’s experiences as a commodities trader, and showing how he developed his ideas and learned to apply them successfully within the markets.

Hawkins moves on to fully discuss this groundbreaking approach to trading the stock, options, and futures markets.

In-depth insights and expert advice will teach you:

  • How to make sound trading decisions using the Market Profile™ and Liquidity Data Bank approach
  • The newest methods in volume analysis, including On Floor Information (OFI) and Volume @ Time
  • How to recognize the "Steidlmayer distribution"–a trading concept that serves as the basic building block from which all market activity develops
  • How to formulate a game plan and fine-tune your strategy
  • And much more

Fully updated and completely revised to reflect today’s ever-changing economic environment, the new edition of Steidlmayer on Markets combines practical guidelines for learning how to read and use the markets with the underlying principles of how markets work. Filled with helpful tables and charts, and timely new chapters, this book is the most comprehensive guide to trading with Market Profile™.

Steidlmayer is a genious. This comprehensive book on market profile is one of my all-time favorite trading books. For those new to market profile, I do recommend reading Dalton's, Mind Over Markets first as it goes into detail on various profile types.

However, Steidlmayer brings alot of good insights that can help the new and seasoned trader. It is recommended that you have a basic understanding of market profile before reading this book.

"Participating in the markets can only develop your trading skills. You need to become a part of the markets, to know the state of the markets at any given time, and most importantly, to know yourself. You need to be patient, confident, and mentally tough." - Steidlmayer -

Pick this up... you wont regret it.

Asia & European Sessions:   Asian markets were mostly positive on Monday, buoyed by last week’s interest rate decisions from central banks in the US, Japan, China, and the UK. PBOC reduced its 14-day reverse repurchase rate to 1.85% from 1.95%, following a decision to keep key lending rates unchanged the previous week. China’s decision to hold an unusual economic briefing involving three top financial regulators and its cut to a key short-term policy rate heightened speculation about forthcoming stimulus efforts. Chinese stocks rose after the bank’s announcement. Japan’s stock markets were closed due to a public holiday. Attention remained on the BoJ which also stayed put (0.25%) & Ueda suggested that the central bank is cautious on further tightening amid ongoing uncertainty. This decision led to a drop in the Yen. Australia’s ASX 200 dipped 0.5% to 8,170.50 as the RBA prepared for a 2-day policy meeting. Financial Markets Performance: Gold surged to a record high, reaching $2,631.13, as traders anticipated more rate cuts by the Fed following its recent 50 bps reduction. Bullion’s momentum was further supported by concerns over rising tensions in the Middle East, with investors turning to gold as a safe-haven asset. Despite this rally, gold may be overbought, with its RSI nearing 70, a signal of possible short-term overextension. Meanwhile, silver, palladium, and platinum posted losses. USOIL rose to $71.59 per barrel, while UKOIL gained 52 cents, reaching $75.01 per barrel. Currently they have both seen a pullback slightly into EU open. Yen slid from last week’s high of around 140 per US dollar to 144.36 yen by today. The USDIndex steadied to 100.50 area.
