A Trading Pattern For The Impatient Or Time Sensitive Trader

Recommended Posts

Your major focus in trading should the softer side of trading, the business and psychological side of it; the harder side which relates more to the technical side is a secondary thought, however in this article I am combining the two because one of my favourite patterns is an ideal pattern for the impatient trader who does not like to hold on to trades for too long.

Impatience is not a good trait to have in the markets when trading or investing. It breeds laziness when it comes to research, planning and analysis, it causes some to exit trades too early, and it causes other’s to constantly monitor their positions. To add to this, trades that linger on can incur costs such as time premium erosion for options traders, and interest costs for CFD traders or stock traders using margin, to name a couple.

Weaknesses are a part of human nature; your job is to ‘manage’ them, not to try and eliminate them or even turn them into strengths. We were brought up to take our weaknesses and try and turn them into strengths which I believe is the wrong approach. Build on your strengths and manage your weaknesses is the best motto I ever heard.

Some traders who don’t like to be in trades for too long will use an exit strategy that will force them out of the trade if the particular stock or market consolidates and moves sideways for a few days, which is a good strategy. Let’s look at an entry technique which is the trading pattern for the impatient trader.

This pattern signals a turning of the market. It does not necessarily signal a top or bottom, it will sometimes just signal a correction, either way; it tells you that a swift and sharp move the other way is imminent, and usually enough to give a good reward to risk. The emphasis here is ‘swift and sharp’, because this is what the impatient trader is looking for.

The pattern unfolds in 5 waves with the highs and lows of the waves overlapping each other to the point where the 5th wave ends in a spike. Here is a diagram showing what to expect at the end of a run up, and the end of a run down.

diagram.jpg

This is what you need to see and how to trade it:

1. You join the highs of wave 1 and 3 together, and the lows of wave 2 and 4 together if in an up market, and these lines need to converge [or lows of waves 1 and 3, and highs of waves 2 and 4 if in a down market].

2. You want the high of wave 5 to break the upper line and spike [low of wave 5 to break lower line and spike].

3. The break of the lower line is your entry [the break of upper line is your entry].

4. Your stop goes on the other side of the 5th wave.

5. You want your exit or your first profit target to be within the range between the low of wave 1 and wave 2.

6. You shouldn’t take the trade if this range does not offer you at least a reward to risk ratio of 1:1, however this is obviously a personal choice

This is an example that occurred on the SP500 index in July 2008 on a 30 minute chart.

Elliott Wave users will be familiar with this pattern, known as an ending, leading and 5th wave diagonal; others may know it as three drives pattern, and others may just say it’s a wedge pattern.

The point I wanted to make in this article, so as to benefit you is that when these patterns occur they produce swift and sharp moves and this is an obvious benefit to those who don’t like spending too much time in the markets, whether it’s due to being impatient or because of trading instruments that are time sensitive.

Isn't Wave 1, in the S & P 500 example, also Wave 5 of a similar preceding pattern. Trading it could have earned a profit, but not as much as the one you indicated. Presumably, a nimble trader (which I am not) would have traded both profitably.

      Hi,
We are doing a university job where we must investigate how banks manage their financial products that require trading, for example, they offer a fund, as they manage capital internally. Could you help me?
      Thank you!

      Hello everyone!
I am an advanced trader, with many years of experience (about 15 years - 10 living exclusively from this)
I am going to give you some tips that you must know:
There are going to be many people who tell you that trade is easy, that with only crossiing a line  with another one you will win a lot of money.... and that´s not true.  No, Sir, reality is far away from that. Many people who start arrive here with the hope that someone "gives them" a free method, they watch youtube videos thinking that this will give them the "strategy" and in a few days they realize that it does not work for them - they lose money - and then They go looking for a new one ... and so on. YES, IT´S TRUE YOU EARN IN TRADING, A LOT. BUT THINK: for a few to win (10% + any BROKER) many others must lose (90% people). YOU MUST HAVE A MONEY MANAGMENT FORMULA ( you can email me) People study so many years to live on this, not because they are dumb, but to know what they do, when, and have absolute effectiveness. It´s very easy to get lost here: do not disperse, jumping from one to another strategy WILL NEVER give you money, it will only waste your time and make you nervous when trading. PEOPLE WHO CHANGE THEIR METHOD CONSTANTLY : LOOOOSE ALWAYS.   If you have the knowledge to develop it, take your time and do it.  Always try it first on DEMO for at least 2 weeks! If not: search to buy a solid strategy (no you tube videos pleassse ! Avoid losing money! ) This is like any business, it requires some capital to start (capital = money in the broker + solid made /purchased strategy) If you are lost: I RECOMMEND YOU NOT TO WASTE TIME IN YOUTUBE, JOIN PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY A METHOD ... PLEASE !!!! DO NOT BUY 10 BAD AND CHEAP METHODS, SAVE MONEY AND BUY ONLY 1 BUT EXCLUSIVE AND MUST ALLWAYS HAVE SUPPORT !!!!!  Do not buy Signals! They never keep up with constant profits! One week will win and the next will lose. Nothing that does not depend absolutely on you will give you the money you are looking for. And if you do not have a strategy (made or purchased) do not even try PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE: DO NOT USE REAL MONEY! AT LEAST 2 WEEK DEMO FREE HELP HERE!!!!!  IF YOU FOLLOW MY ADVICE YOU WILL BE PART OF THAT 10% WINNER, email me.
      Have a nice trading day

So I've been 18 for about 4 months, since I turned 18 I started up an account, and basically thought I was doing amazing because of beginners luck, put in some of my savings and managed to do well, some days I would make £200, one day I even made £900, after time I lost my profits and made a loss as well. I've realised I need to spend the time analysing the market and making technical judgments. I'm trying to read more and spend a lot of my time looking at the charts. is there any advice people can give me. and is making 5% a week a realistic goal to set myself? before anyone assumes that im looking for a get rich quick scheme, im certainly not, I see every loss ive made as a lesson and ensure that I learn from each mistake I make.
any advice about indicators, strategies, how to analyse the market, or even analysing earning reports would help me.

Does it mean that you are an expert just because you make a lot of profit? The amount of profit cannot be used to measure the value of a trader. Yes, you must be doing something right if you are making a frequent profit. However, that does not determine if you are an expert or not just by your profit. This is quite a common misunderstanding in the forex industry.
Making a large profit is only one side of the forex market. Majority of forex traders tend to lose most of the time after they have experienced profit. But why?
So many traders fall into a fantasy land where they make an endless amount of money at the beginning. Many beginner traders tend to gain profit at the start not knowing the importance of technical analysis of the market.
The experts on the other hand who stayed became wealthy and stayed that way, continue gaining profit, are all knowledgeable when it comes to the basics. Experts have dialed many ways to control their minds to be set right to be a trader.
Understanding of the market is a must know anyway. Expert traders wait patiently until the right opportunity comes. Opportunity comes to everyone.
What differentiates the experts and the beginners is that experts know when the opportunity has come and knows to take advantage of it. Making profit by luck is possible, and yes luck is also very important. But can you profit with luck every time?
How an expert trader is determined is not by how much the person gained, it’s about the precision and the frequency of results. Profit can’t be maintained by luck. It is maintained and is a result of precision and strategical execution. You shouldn’t worry because you’re not gaining any profit right now.
You should be building your skill sets to be a better trader by experiencing many trading situations of losses and wins. If you invest in your time to improve, your results are guaranteed to increase more frequently and will become more stable.

    • I guess US has fund managers and investment banking institutions looking after the portfolios on behalf of their clients.

    • Nothing wrong with being a ‘progressive’. Nothing wrong with being a ‘conservative’.  Very generally, ‘conservatives’ have preponderance of the here and now neurotransmitters, prefer empirical references, the rule of law, and value individual agency (It has been said that conservatives love humans and progressives love humanity) . Very generally, ‘progressives’ are dopaginaric - driven by passion for a better possible future, prefer references to others  (Example Karmela won’t answer questions with facts.  She cites the opinion of 18 ‘experts’), have a penchant for rule by man/mobs not by law , and value ‘societal' agency.  However, excesses of either tendency indicates mental illness, collective malaise, and has consequences.  When either camp is systematically captured by control seekers and/or, situationally by mobs, the whole is lessened. A key sign that is occurring is when one side no longer allows disagreement.  Progressives have  currently gone crazy in those excesses and are no longer allowing anything but unithought... examples - You can still be a vocal pro choice republican.  Try being a vocal pro life democrat. For snicks just try it.  You’ll get cancelled.  Bust a myth about blacks in America, true up the real  history of Republicans ending slavery and what has happened since, how the democrats are the party of the KKK, how Obama did not a fkn thang for blacks in general, be a black republican, etc.    You will get canceled in a heartbeat. Step up and question the social agendas of federally subsidized schools at a board meeting... get treated like shit and also get an immediate case number with the FBI ... Question the requirements to watch and lickkiss the 'rainbows' and also make sure your kids show up for it, not to mention fund transitions out of your pocket and see what you get ‘labeled’ Question mainstream media bias - even just to mention that biased, agenda driven narrative is different from truth in reporting - and see what happens to your voice... Excesses have consequences... imbalances have consequences... just sayin’
