custom Python algo trading platform

Recommended Posts

found this link over on EliteTrader and loved it. Very inspiring for someone like me who is building my own trading code from the ground up

what are your thoughts on this?

My primary language is Python. Despite some uninformed beliefs that Python is too slow for algo trading, and that algorithmic trading is best left to C/C++ or some hardware programmed FPGAs, Python is perfectly suitable and more than fast enough for any retail trader who wants to get into algorithmic trading.
Despite what some believe, you don't need very beefy hardware to trade or algo trade. A few of my best and most profitable trades have been done on an old netbook with a 10", low resolution, screen. People who invest into expensive hardware, computer setups, etc.. before they even have a prof of concept hammered out (be it a trade plan, or algo strategy,) are putting the 'cart before the horse.'
Algos are good for when you don’t have enough hands, eyes, or aren’t fast enough to do something manually. If you already can do something efficiently on your own, then turning it into an algo will only make performance worse because I can’t encapsulate your years of experience into lines of code. Also, if you ask me to code up a moving average crossover strategy, we aren’t friends anymore.

guy writes an algo platform from scratch in python and connects it to multiple brokers and data sources               nutz

Wrote a algo bot based on OP’s concept in this post where he made 20k+ before getting banned by Robinhood.
      /r/wallstreetbets/comments/j0giqu/robinhood_banned_me_for_making_too_much_money
Basically OP just used a click bot/ keystroke script on a android emulator with the Robinhood app to submit a buy order 1 cent above the bid, canceling 100ms later if not filled and repeat till filled, once filled immediately do the same on the ask to exit. Makes you best bid and ask always without updating the NBBO.
Made a bot to do exactly the same as OP in the other post, except instead of a click bot I used Robinhood’s internal API + python script configured for speed. Making it faster and easier than OP’s to use. Also has code to limit it to 390 or less orders per day to keep it from triggering professional status with Robinhood.
      https://imgur.com/a/uv6yNoL
Example: VXX call option, lets say the bid/ask is .16 X .21
The bot would flash a buy order at .17 every 100ms, once filled it flashes a sell order every 100ms at .20. You are providing a better price/ liquidity without the NBBO updating and paying zero commission for it.
I normally trade with Schwab, but opened an account with Robinhood just to run this bot. Used the profit from their free stock to test it out on VXX options.
Only thing you really have to lookout for is volume traded on the option. Wana go for options like VXX, GOOG, AMZN and others where the spread is wider and have volume, OP does the same with his bot.
      Why this works:
A couple reasons why, first off because of zero commission, you keep all the money you make off the spread.
Second, this type of algorithmic trading is called market making or more generally providing liquidity. In principle, the apparently free money is compensation for helping the markets to be liquid. The more people do this, the tighter the spread will be and the greater liquidity will be available on each side.
      https://imgur.com/a/S6O8h6d
tldr: Robbin the Hood, making money at Robinhood's expense with a bot and not getting banned.
Currently using it, will post future updates.
      Download link : https://app.simplegoods.co/i/PRWTMIQP
Its 3 python source files and a readme, All you need it python 3.9 installed and a Robinhood acc

    • Date: 27th June 2024. Market News – Asian Declines, Tech Sector Losses and Anticipation for PCE.   Economic Indicators & Central Banks: Several events are on the calendar which are keeping a cautious tone in the markets: Although tonight’s presidential debate is much anticipated, it’s unlikely to impact the markets as it won’t provide any real clues on fiscal or monetary policy. Asian shares decline, with US futures amid ongoing losses in the tech sector. Friday’s PCE chain price report has Treasury bulls sidelined for now and the run up in yields is tempering activity on Wall Street. Though expectations are for a benign report, upside surprises in Australia and Canadian CPI are generating some concerns. Chinese stocks are headed for a technical correction. The earlier rally that pushed Chinese equities into bull markets this year has been losing momentum due to ongoing concerns about an uneven economic recovery. Investors are now focusing on the Third Plenum, the July meeting historically known for significant economic policy announcements by the Communist Party. Asian & European Open: Wall Street rallied with all three major indexes finishing in the green. A bounce in tech boosted the NASDAQ 0.49%, back to 17,805. The S&P500 was up 0.16% and the Dow edged up 0.04%. Micron Technology Inc.’s sales outlook fell short of the highest forecasts, denting giant tech companies in late Wall Street trading. Asian equities declined on Thursday, with Hong Kong experiencing the largest losses as Chinese tech companies and property developers listed in the city fell. Significant contributors to the drop included electric vehicle maker BYD, travel agency Trip.com, and Tencent. Financial Markets Performance: The USDIndex was a big winner, climbing to a session peak of 106.130 before closing at 106.079, the highest since late April. A surge in USDJPY to 160.79, the highest since 1986, supported. Today the Yen recovered by 0.3% against the Dollar, to 160.29. Gold and USOIL prices declined, in part on the firmer Dollar. Bullion fell -0.49% to $2298 per ounce and USOIL slipped -0.2% to $80.36 per barrel. Always trade with strict risk management.
