Hey Tams, I'm still a little uncertain though on the purpose of programming a strategy... It may sound dumb but is it for automation or is it to produce signals...? I do a lot of work through excel right now and want to step it up a bit... I've been thinking about matlab but im debating on spending my time on something like C# or Python.
-
Hi guys, I was just wondering if someone could explain to me the benefits of knowing a programming language like C++ or C# in trading. Does anyone here currently trade from home using C++/C#/Matlab/Python ? Really would love to learn more about this from some seasoned vets on Traders Lab

Hi everyone I was wondering where can you find free Historical Data for the E-minis to Backtest....?
-
Thank you for this ADDChild!
-
Steve, Do you trade quantitatively?
-
Lol thanks DB, I appreciate you putting things in perspective
-
Structure I guess and attempting to develop an edge - maybe computers might not be the end all be all in trading? I want to trade futures, specifically CL, and knowing how dominant high frequency trading is and algos are I guess i'm trying to derive an edge around that

For everyone that has read/given feedback to my previous post on applying math to technical analysis, I wanted to do a followup post to ask the community who here applies quantitative methods to their trading specifically in regards to technical analysis....? I have read ernest chan's book "quantitative trading"; however, I have no desire to trade mechanically. I was wondering if it was possibly to develop quantitative indicators specifically in regards to technical analysis and apply them as a discretionary trader. Any feedback/insight is extremely appreciated!

Thank you very much for sharing this with me, this is exactly what I was looking for! Do you trade according to Bulkowskis methods?
-
Thank you very much for this!

Please disregard the comment above I was wondering what is your opinion on Cliff Sherrys book? I have it and have read the first few chapters. Do you apply some of the knowledge in this book to your trading?
-
Hey Steve, Thank you for your reply. I don't have an undergrad in stats but I have taken stats classes in my undergraduate degree. To what level of stats do you suggest having? Are there any books do you recommend?
-
not one person on here uses stats in there trading....?

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you guys apply math to your technical analysis when trading? (i.e. Determining probabilities of patterns completing using Price and Volume...) If so how can you do this? Don't know if this makes any sense to technical analysis but I was wondering if any of you guys out there have converted your technical analysis in trading into a science....

Addchild, I really appreciate this!

Hey YertleTurtle, I appreciate the detailed advice. You haven't insulted me but I would like to tell you a bit about myself so you don't have the wrong impression. By no means can I call my self a trader yet. I am still in the learning phases; however, with that being said, its not like I just learned about trading yesterday. I have been around the markets for the past 4 years, only recently have I decided to jump into futures trading. I plan to trade 95% technically with the remainder being my fundamental analysis on the oil market. For the past month and a half all I have been doing in regards to preparing myself for this task is developing my trading plan There are a few things as a newbie I would like to ask you on: -How would you define the market structure for oil? -What is your primary technical methodology in trading CL? -Is a 10-20cent stop adequate for some setups in CL or is that asking for it due to how fast it moves,,,? -I don't understand how you could trade oil off the hourly... Could you please elaborate on that? I understand that you are a price action trader to the Tee. I am all ears and willing to take notes to learn. As you have a plethora of experience in this, I would appreciate any tips/advice you could give someone like myself who is looking at getting starting in trading oil futures. Many Thanks, Suby

Hey eqsys, Thanks for the reply. Its official that I will not touch QM but rather will trade CL. I don't see the point in trading oil ETFS. There not the best instruments to daytrade in my opinion unless your account is 25000+. In addition, if you can't day trading something like USO then you'd have to settle for swing trades that last for a few days and would encounter time decay. I don't plan on trading CL until I feel extremely comfortable in sim trading - However, are there any tips that you could provide someone who is looking to attack something like CL?
-
In addition, Do you base your trades off of CL's Chart when executing QM or solely on QM's chart? What kind of Time Frame do you use? (3 charts 1 min, 5min and 10?) I apologize if you don't even trade QM but replying to my question I am assuming you do Any advice is appreciated!

Hey henryduncan12, I appreciate that link. I wouldn't exactly consider myself an absolutely new trader (probably on the verge of rookie). I have come to the realization that I want to focus on solely oil and in doing so I want to start with the Mini. I thought I could get some advice/feedback on this I.e. when trading oil futures do you use a blend of fundamental and technical analysis? or solely Technical Analysis? what indicators do you use ? Have you had any experience with QM? If so what kind of pointers could you give. So far I see that the volume and slippage are two completely different things when comparing QM to CL...
-
Hey guys, Have been thinking about starting to trade 1 contract of QM lately and was wondering if I could get some thoughts and opinions on how to get started... So far I have noticed that there is a bit of slippage on QM as opposed to CL due to the decrease in contracts traded. Was wondering if I could get some tips/pointers from the pros on here who currently trade QM and more or less get a discussion going to Oil Trading... Cheers!

Backtesting TA Strategies - Discretionary Trading and The Wyckoff Way
suby replied to suby's topic in Technical Analysis
First time behind the computer this weekend, but thank you for the detailed reply BlueHorseshoe! I can't think of anything too indepth at this point of time just two questions for you 1) How/what do you use to backtest? What is your Opinion on Trading Blox? 2) Where do you obtain your data from? -
I have checked through the forums in attempts to learn a bit more on backtesting and I can't deem what is on here as valid. I realize that this should probably be posted in automated trading but as a discretionary trader who uses Technical Analysis I figured this would be the best spot. I was wondering if other discretionary traders on here who follow Technical Analysis backtest... If so, what do you often test for? Specifically in regards to trading with the Price to Volume relationship and the teachings of Wyckoff Suby

Nevermind, please disregard my post from above. I would like to thank you for all of your comments in my threads and all of the advice you have given me thus far. Suby

Hey DB, The link to the preview is not working.... is there anyone you can repost it or e-mail it to me?

Hey eqsys, I'm still pretty new to backtesting and would love to learn more. Do you have any reading material you could send my way. What programs do you use to backtest?
