Vendors Vendors Vendors
MadMarketScientist replied to MadMarketScientist's topic in General Discussion
Hi everyone, I'm on route to Germany for a little vacation but since the plane is delayed by 4 hours :crap: I thought I would update everyone on the decision we've made regarding vendors. We've read every post, looked at other forums to see what they do, talked to our sponsors, debated both sides, and have come to the conclusion the following path forward: 1. TL will be identifying members who have commercial intent on TL with a visible indicator 2. TL will update forum rules to ask these members to notify TL if they have commercial intent when they join. Members who have trading-related businesses but are not using TL to solicit business will not be classified as such. 3. Members are encouraged to notify TL management if they think someone is using TL with commercial intent but has not yet been identified as a vendor. 4. Commercial (and all) members are encouraged to continue to post and create good content and discussions. 5. Aggressive solicitation and spam by vendors will not be tolerated. 6. Vendor-bash posts and thread hi-jacks will not be tolerated. 7. Identified vendors will also be given their own thread in the Reviews section (if they wish) where members can discuss their products\services. I want to stress again the indicator is not a value statement on the member, it is *only* for identification. Thanks everyone for your comments on this topic. I'm sure we will tweak the rules as time goes but we think this is a good start. We will be implementing the indicator within the next week or so. thanks, MMS -

Hi, Moderators are removing posts that turn good threads into heated arguments and name calling. But we are not removing posts where one person respectfully disagrees with another person's statements. Your post refuting the claims was not removed. As long as the conversation stays respectful it will be allowed to stay. But once it turns into a shouting match, we will remove all posts that are disrespectful. But we cannot possibly censor all posts, nor should we make the judgement, which are fraudulent or not. You disagreed with the claims, you've made your point to the readers, and everyone reading the thread will see that. There is no need to let the argument continue to hijack the thread. But we will also not censor what people say - if they think they have the 'holy grail' and can 'make money in their sleep', they've shown to the other readers more than enough about the legitimacy of their product\service. If some people still want to believe and pursue these products then it is their right to do so. It is a fine line we are dealing with here, and I know it will be impossible to make everyone happy. But unlike the current US government (had to make a dig here!) we believe in less intervention and to let the free market run, within certain rules of course. Questions for the community: 1. Do you think members should be making judgement's of products\services for other people? 2. Do you need a better way (aside from hijacking an existing thread) to voice your opinion on these products\services? Maybe new Reviews forums? thanks, MMS -

The moderators will remove URL's from posts when they are reported - we prefer if you just report the post as we get emails and will take care of it immediately. thx MMS -
Hi, Yes, vendor-related (bash, accusation, prove yourself, etc) posts that are off-topic from the original thread will be deleted as they take the good thread down a bad road. thx MMS

Hi Moyyim, Thanks for the question. Yes as long as we feel there is value in the mention\link. The moderators will remove all links\references to other sites IF they feel it is too spammy or if it is clearly obvious they are just promoting something. They won't always get it right so members can also report posts they feel have crossed the line. But we let people post links, etc to other sites all the time - a good example is the recent Market Manipulation thread. http://www.traderslaboratory.com/forums/trading-markets/10655-market-manipulation.html. You wouldn't believe the amount of spammy posts\threads we delete everyday! I hope this helps, MMS -

Let's be careful with this statement - some of the best threads at TL have been started by people who are vendors. Secondly, this list is not making a value statement (e.g. they are bad people) about them, just identifying them as requested by the community. And these people still continue to create some of the best content for everyone to read and discuss. As an example, Tim Racette has contributed an enourmous amount of excellent articles and (hopefully) will continue to do so. Same with Rande, Norm, etc. Everyone is welcome here at TL and the moderators will try their best to keep everyone behaving within the rules of the community. thx MMS -

I think the key point here is that we should let the members *decide for themselves* what to do with the information. No one here needs to decide for them. Let's not be so cynical and assume every time someone mentions a product he is trying to sell it. I don't know if doubletop11 is or not but he is welcome to say he likes a product. And even if he was, maybe someone reading is looking for a recommendation on some software? Point is, everyone can decide for themselves if a post has value. thanks, MMS -

The Prerequisite Golf Joke A circus owner runs an ad for a lion tamer, and two people show up. One is a retired golfer in his late sixties, and the other is a gorgeous blonde in her mid-twenties. The circus owner tells them, "I'm not going to sugarcoat it. This is one ferocious lion. He ate my last tamer, so you two had better be good, or you're history. Here's your equipment - chair, a whip and a gun. Who wants to try out first?" The girl says, "I'll go first." She walks past the chair, the whip and the gun and steps right into the lion's cage. The lion starts to snarl and pant and begins to charge her. About halfway there, she throws open her coat revealing her beautiful naked body. The lion stops dead in his tracks, sheepishly crawls up to her and starts licking her feet and ankles. He continues to lick and kiss her entire body for several minutes and then rests his head at her feet. The circus owner's jaw is on the floor. He says, "I've never seen a display like that in my life." He then turns to the retired golfer and asks, "Can you top that?" The old golfer replies, "No problem; just get that lion out of there." MMS

Amen ... the majority of the vendors listed have provided and continue to provide real value and content to the site and are welcome to hang out here. As an example, urma and steve46 started some of the best threads on TL. Further, we already moderate most of the slimy ones that you don't even see. So let's all be careful not to get into a witch-hunt as these guys are respected *contributing* members of TL as much as everyone else is. thx, MMS -
In the US there are certain resource stocks called MLP's that pay nice quarterly distributions. a big one is Kinder Morgan (KMP). There are also resource royalty stocks that pay nice monthly distributions, a popular one is Mesa Royalty Trust (MTR). In Canada, they used to have income trusts that pay nice monthly\quarterly distributions but they were all forced to convert to corporations (tax reasons). But some of them still pay decent monthly distributions. A favorite of mine is Pembina Pipeline Corp (PPL). I prefer monthly distributions because the compounding works a little faster. But at the end of the day, if you are after income, you need to find something where the principle is *safe*. MMS
