HOT TOPIC Will the Germans Really Bring Back the Deutsche Mark? - http://www.traderslaboratory.com/forums/market-analysis/10975-will-germans-really-bring-back-deutsche.html The whole idea being touted about as the Euro becoming the world's new reserve currency seems a distant memory now. Ireland seemed to have fixed it's problems, Portugal again wasn't great but overall Greece has so far been the major problem. However, it's Italy and Spain that are the major concern. If the spread between their debt and the German benchmark widens, they'll just not be able to afford to pay for much. That ain't exactly a positive scenario for the Euro in my mind ...
  3. Even though it is in their best interest (why pay for the overspending greeks, spaniards, italians?) I don't think their overwhelming guilt over the 2 world wars will let them be the bad guys a third time. There is always talk about taking some assets in exchange of the bailout (some nice greek islands or their 'free' subway system) - which would seem like a good solution. But again, not wanting to appear aggressive is their primary (but not spoken of) concern. MMS

  21. From 24/7 Wall Street: After the Flash Crash of 2010 and with the proliferation of how much the trading machines dominate the markets now, this needed to be done. The thresholds will lower the broad market decline percentage triggers, shorten the duration of the trading halts, and also change the reference index. The existing market-wide circuit breakers were originally adopted in October 1988 and have only been triggered on one day in 1997. The basic proposals are as follows: Lower the market decline percentage thresholds from 10%, 20%, and 30% down to new levels of 7%, 13%, and 20% from the prior day’s closing price. The duration of the trading halts that do not close the market for the day would go from 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or 120 minutes down to 15 minutes. Rather than six time periods, the only two relevant trigger time periods would be before 3:25 P.P. and on or after 3:25 P.M. The new proposal would strip the Dow Jones Industrial Average as the reference index and would change to the S&P 500 Index as the pricing reference. 23. When enough people don't believe that the US will pay them back and start demanding payment in other forms, eg. gold silver, yuan, etc. This is already happening in a small scale as the last time I was in mexico, no one took US dollars. But there has to be an alternative and the issues with the euro is the best thing that could happen to the dollar. Another way is if the US continues to debase the dollar and inflate away its value. Couple that with a weakening economy and it is a possibility it may lose its reserve status in our lifetime. MMS
