  13. Taken from the ELX website description: "ELX Futures, L.P. (ELX Futures) is a new fully regulated electronic futures exchange formed in December 2007 by leading financial institutions to establish a faster, more efficient competitive alternative for global market participants trading futures contracts. Starting July 10, 2009, with a slate of four U.S. Treasury futures contracts, ELX Futures will allow for market arbitrage, outright and spread execution and cash/futures basis trading through multiple front ends and an ultra fast matching engine. " ELX was setup by banks and financial institutions in order to compete with Globex. From my understanding the formation of ELX was due to inflexibility of the exchanges and increase in commissions. Currently ELX only holds treasury futures. The following instruments are available: 2yr, 5yr, 10yr, and 30yr Margin rates: 10yr chart:

  15. US rules on abusive short selling Article here.
  16. I also trade at work but the firm permits me to do so. I have access to real-time data for most exchanges and I use the wall in front of me to display quotes and charts from a projector. The environment suits me well but it would be hard to trade from work if the firm was not this compromising. Snapshot of my wall:
  17. Sure diablo, its definitely possible. You should know a good number of traders here are expats. What might work is to apply in your country and request to be sent to Japan which might be appealing for the firm. The base salary for expats are also higher than compared to locals.
  18. The head hunters job is to find you a position within the area of your interest. They get paid commission... up to 3 months salary if you are hired by the hiring firm. Recruitment industry is big business and Japan is flooded with them. Try registering with recruiting agencies especially those that specialize in the financial industry. You will end up meeting with them initially and then they will use their resources to find you a position based on your credentials. For example, I have found 2 trading positions in the past using a career recruitment website like Bilingual Jobs, Careers, Work & Employment in Japan : CareerCross (Japan only). I assume there must be sites like this in other countries as well. Regarding educational degree.... I landed my first trading job without one so its really a case by case scenario.
  19. I think the criteria for joining an institution differs from firm to firm and from country to country. In Japan, a track record is the resume of a trader and as long as you have a solid 3 years or so track record many firms are likely to bring you in. However, depending on the prop firm some may require an initial good faith deposit. One prop firm I dealt with in the past asked for a $10k deposit... this is a subsidiary of a major bank here locally. Some prop firms in Boston required a $30k deposit. For investment banks, the hiring of traders has diminished severely. Many require 7+ yrs of experience in an institutional environment.... trading positions are rather scarce and only in a bull market are firms likely to expand and take in more less experienced traders. You should definitely talk to head hunters if this is your preferred path.... they have helped me land institutional positions. I tend to maintain good relationships with all my head hunters as well.
  20. Thank you Hal for helping out. We have a very low 5 post policy to enable the pm'ing system. We do this in order to avoid spammers abusing our pm system. Thank you.

  23. There has been some decent activity in the coding forum and thought I would add specific languages as subforums. Languages that have been added are C and C++, C3, VB, Python, and Java. If you would like to see more languages, please post your request here. Thank you.
  24. What is it like being an oil trader? Article by BBC located here.
  25. Thought I would post this chart, have been waiting for this setup for a possible swing back to the bottom of its range. Clear selling pressure at the top of its range... with heavy decline into the close. Also note the range occurring after a decent uptrend. Possible clues include the bar on July 7th. Samsung Electronics rose to yearly highs due to strong quarterly earnings forecast. However, foreign investors sold on that day triggering sell programs... we tested the 7th high again today and failed.
