Where to Find Web Based Futures Charts?
Harlequin replied to Dinerotrader's topic in Beginners Forum
Futures exchanges usually charge data fees, these are not passed on by most brokers but if you just want real time futures data Barchart Real-Time Data Services is one option but it is not free. -
Backtesting Morning Range Breakout Using Excel VBA
Harlequin replied to pmsinc's topic in Automated Trading
Does anyone have EL code for opening range breakout that works in MultiCharts? I couldn't find anything with Google but it feels like reinventing the wheel writing it from scratch. -
Do you mean when you post? If so under "Miscellaneous Options" there is the option "Disable smilies in text"

I stay away from breakouts on the ES. Buying pull backs and selling rallies is working much better for me.

In my experience I would say pivots act as support and resistance. However that may cause a bounce or just a consolidation before continuation. Coming up with a successful strategy to trade pivots will not be easy. IMO Tams gave good advice, observe what happens at pivots and you can learn a lot about the market action of the day.

PowerLanguage/EL How to Recalculate at Session Close
Harlequin replied to Harlequin's topic in Coding Forum
Thanks for help. Looks like Sess1StartTime is what I need to use, I'm just having a problem making a loop which increments each every day at that time. I'll search for that thread on Globex high/lows and see what I can find. Cheers. -
I currently use if Date <> Date[1] then begin to get an indicator to update at the end of each day, but that means I have to wait to midnight for values to be updated. I'm trying to get this to happen at 4:30PM when Globex reopens. Is there any way of using the session end time instead?

Why didn't I think of that:doh: PLEditor_129.zip

I would upload it but .ico is not an allowed file type.

Introduce Yourself Here - Don't Be Shy!!
Harlequin replied to trading4life's topic in Beginners Forum
Welcome. Corn is great place to start with futures. I wouldn't recommend currency futures for a small account, maybe the minis but I'm not sure about the liquidity. Good luck.- 2026 replies

The SP and ES can never get far away from each other as there are many arbitrage traders. They work in pairs communicating with radio head sets, one in the pit and the other sat in an office with electronic access. Mainly they are just looking to get the 5 cents offered in the different tick sizes. Eg. buy 827.70 in the pit and sell 5x as many at 827.75 in the emini. As Ben so succinctly puts it "picking up nickels in front of a steamroller". It's difficult to which leads the other as action in one will always be followed by the other. So I think they take turns depending on where the big players choose to strike. I used Traders Audio for a long time and learned a lot about how trading works from Ben's commentary. The trading style I use now means I now longer use it but it was a valuable part of my education.

Yes that's where I found it. Getting bored this weekend and as I know nothing about Gann so I thought I'd do a little research. But I'm not paying $437 for a Gann wheel Lambert - Gann Publishing Company : The Official and Complete Source for W. D. Gann's Work, Trading Resources and Supplies. :haha: Thanks for your help.
-
I found this indicator but cannot open it in Multicharts. Please could someone with Tradestation try and open it and post in text format if its OK. Thanks GANNHILO.ELD

Or a good old Matrox G450.

PM sent but as I say it is now a paid service rather than a blog.
-
It's not my thing but I know someone who has done a lot of back testing and research on ES opening gaps. (I won't plug him here as his blog is now a paid service). He pays a lot of attention to categorizing gaps on size and how that relates to the previous days price action. (up/down day gap in upper/lower of yesterday range or gap from range etc.) It should be possible to come up with a profitable strategy for FTSE and DAX but it will require a lot of work with back testing. Good luck.

Not free, but for a very high quality feed at a reasonable price I would recommend DTN IQfeed which a DDE link. It also gives access to many extra fields like 52 week high/low open interest etc.

There isn't much I can add to excellent advice already given. So I'll just add my personal experience. When I first started like most others I thought I'm smart I'll be making money in a few months or a year from now. Well it turned out to be nearer 3 years. I was lucky enough to have enough savings, low outgoings and no dependants to stay in in long enough to finally get there. Never trade with scared money. Try and find a regular job to get you through whilst learning all you can about trading. Best of luck.

Yes Tams an excellent product. It was a bit of a gamble when I bought it as there was so much development still to do. But the current version betas are looking good!

Seeking Rec on Zen-fire Compatible Broker
Harlequin replied to taotree's topic in Brokers and Data Feeds
taotree, I'll leave bathrobe to clarify but I think he's quoting margin not commissions. Unfortunately in this business margins are negotiated and brokers like to keep their lowest offer out of the public domain so they can get all the newbies to just accept their first offer. Interactive Brokers are what I refer to a a discount broker, no single individual to hold your hand, their standard published rate for ES is $4.70 RT, min account to open is $10k and margin requirements much higher. In my experience brokers that will open an account for $2.5K or £5K and $500 margin will charge anywhere from $5.5 - $7 RT. But if you do have a much larger account you can get much lower like the $4.40 you quote. Maybe I just don't have the negotiating skills to get that so hopefully bathrobe can shed some more light. -
Seeking Rec on Zen-fire Compatible Broker
Harlequin replied to taotree's topic in Brokers and Data Feeds
Yes I got the margin it's the commission levels I was unclear on. I use IB for my main account and can live with the high margin requirements as I would never trade more than 1 car for every 10k in my account (gets me through the bad days). If Mirus and Amp meet all the OP requirements it would be a good option for a back up account in case IB has technical problems, only 2.5k sat in the account and $500 margin would hedge 5 cars for me, no platform fees and no minimum activity so it would be OK to only use occasionally. Only unanswered question is the commission rates, I can imagine it difficult to negotiate $4.70 RT on an account like that. -

Bathrobe, What would ES commission be like on a 2.5K account, (if you know)? Could be a good option for a second back up account for me. Thanks. -
Seeking Rec on Zen-fire Compatible Broker
Harlequin replied to taotree's topic in Brokers and Data Feeds
Looks like you're asking for an impossible combination. No. 4 and 5 are usually mutually exclusive. No. 3 would be discount brokers (Not Zenfire) No. 1 & 2 normally exclude 3. I'm not trying to be negative here, I'm just saying you may need to lower you're expectations a bit. For example expect a minimum activity or small platform fee. I think Mirus is the probably the nearest to what you are looking for. Good Luck, Harlequin
